With privilege from the Lords States of Holland and West Friesland - 2 volumes. - Amsterdam, Pieter Mortier, bookseller, 1700. - (14), 282 (8); (22), 163, (12) pages + respectively 141 and 73 leaves (214 = 428 pages) with 2 engravings on each page. - folios, blind-stamped parchment bindings with raised bands on the spine.

Good. Interior discoloration, some spots here and there, a (light) moisture mark in the lower margin of many pages - with some overlapping in the engraving or text. A tear of about 15cm in the first part of page 17, restoration of small tears on pages 249 and 256, and a hole in the upper margin of page 264. A tear in the margin, about 1 to 3cm, on 6 pages.

Engravings/vignettes beautifully dark in print. With the 5 cards: including a world map, the paradise, the exodus of the children of Israel, the holy land – all engravings/cards depicted.


This Bible is known as 'The Great Bible of Pieter Mortier'. The word 'Bible' is incorrect; it gives the impression that we are dealing with a Bible, but this is a picture Bible, with more than 400 biblical illustrations accompanied by brief descriptions. 'Great Bible of Mortier' (=Poortman II, pp. 98-105).
