Ancient Chinese, Han dynasty; Rabbit - TL Test Qed Laboratoire, polychrome terracotta sculpture, 23 cm tall and 26 cm wide, with thermoluminescence certificate.
Description from the seller
Rabbit; China, Han Dynasty, 206-220 AD.
Polychrome terracotta.
Attach thermoluminescence certificate.
Free-standing sculpture representing a Tang period rabbit or hare made of terracotta. The piece is presented to the viewer in an alert position, which adds a certain anecdotal appearance. Remnants of polychromy can be observed in the eyes, the interior of the ears, and the snout of the animal, giving the piece greater realism. It is a work of high technical quality, especially in terms of modeling, as the artist has managed to capture the expressiveness and anatomical naturalism of the animal, without neglecting the stylization typical of Chinese aesthetics of the period.
The Han Dynasty ruled China from 206 BC to 220 AD, over more than four centuries during which China's political, social, and economic structures were consolidated, leading the country into its most glorious period. Regarding the art of this era, it remains predominantly funerary, although it reflects the high artistic level achieved both in the capitals and the provinces. These preserved objects provide us with information about daily life and customs of the time, as the art became much more mundane than the bronzes of the Zhou and Shang periods. Tumulus structures also changed: Shang tombs were vertical, while Han tombs were built like underground palaces. They were decorated with embossed reliefs depicting scenes from the deceased's life, and a new material was introduced as an artistic support—lacquer. However, the most famous production today is Han ceramics, made of terracotta and decorated with cold-applied engobes, mainly black and red.
The piece includes a thermoluminescence test. LABORATORIO QED - FRANCE
