Description from the seller
PISONIS (Nicolai)
To understanding and treating primarily the internal diseases of the human body.
Leiden, 1736
1 volume (out of 2) small octavo (20 x 15 cm), marbled calfskin (period binding), decorated spine with raised bands, title piece in morocco, red edges, [2]-486 pages (complete volume). Volume I is incomplete, with worn lower corners, a tear on the headband, and some scratches on the covers. Overall, the condition is fair.
Nicolas LE POIS (1527-1590) (Nicolaus Piso), father of Charles, and his brother Antoine studied medicine in Paris, where they followed the teachings of the famous Dubois, known as Sylvius. They came from a well-known family from the Meuse region, closely associated with the dukes of Lorraine, particularly Duke Antoine, who helped these two young students by financing their studies. Nicolas successively served as the physician to Duke François, to Chrestienne, and then as the usual doctor for Claude of France, who was suffering from an evolving tuberculosis that would cause her early death, after having carried out eight pregnancies between the ages of 16 and 27, the last of which proved fatal in 1575. A renowned practitioner, he published a work titled 'De cognoscendis et curandis praecipue internis humani corporis morbis.' This book, printed in Frankfurt in 1580, was very successful. It saw a new edition in 1736 by a famous Dutch physician, Boerhaave, and a final edition in 1764.
Good specimen.
