Second edition of this reference work in the field of pharmacy in the 18th century, authored by Pierre Pomet, corrected and expanded with observations on the properties, uses, and doses of certain drugs by Joseph Pomet, the author's son. The first edition of this extremely comprehensive treatise for the use of apothecaries, pharmacists, druggists, herbalists, grocers, and doctors was published in Paris in 1694.

The remarkable illustration of the work consists of numerous botanical and zoological etchings printed on 88 / 91 plates outside the text, some of which are fold-out, and a frontispiece signed I. Crespy.

Pierre Pomet was a French drug merchant, born on April 2, 1658, in Paris, and died on November 18, 1699, in the same city. After apprenticing, he traveled to Italy, Germany, Great Britain, and Holland. He returned to Paris, where he opened a drug store.
He quickly gained a great reputation. Soon, he began giving lessons to explain the making of his products. He regularly publishes a catalog of the simple or compound drugs from his extensive collection, as well as a description of his cabinet of curiosities. In 1694, he published the Histoire générale des drogues, dealing with plants, animals, and minerals, among other things, illustrated with more than 400 engravings.
The publication of the work is somewhat difficult, as some of his notes and drawings have been stolen. Despite legal action, he does not obtain compensation for this harm.
His work is considered the most comprehensive and reliable of its time. It has been translated into several languages, including German and English.

Preserved in a beautiful full calf marbled binding, with cold-pressed borders framing the covers, a smooth spine decorated with gilded borders, small tools, and floral motifs, a red leather title piece, and gilded initials, with the author and date stamped at the foot. Red edges.

Very beautiful copy. Overall in good condition. Solid binding, some scuffs and stains on the covers. Restoration marks on the headbands, hinges, and corners. Interior fresh and clean, with some scattered foxing (quite rare), and one torn plate without loss.
