Binding signed by René Kieffer in full navy blue morocco, with gilded composition on the covers, decorated spine. Gilded head. Covers and spine preserved.

Slightly worn spine, small scuffs at the ends of the head and tail. Impeccable interior. Very beautiful copy, untrimmed. Note in red ink on the title of volume 1 indicating the continuation of the watercolor drawings.

A Roman epistolary work designed as a classical tragedy, whose overwhelming success led to numerous editions to meet public demand. At the same time, its author was censored and threatened in his military career as a consequence of the scandal caused by his book.
