Rare original edition illustrated by Georges Roux (85 drawings and 12 large chromolithograph engravings), bound in its famous publisher's cardboard cover known as 'the two silver elephants' and with a fan, second attempt at silver decoration after that done in 1885 for the banner of 'Mathias Sandorf.' Signed plate by Souze, bound by Lenègre. Smooth spine decorated with gilded panels with the binder's and publisher's names at the tail. Second plate of Lenègre type 'e' according to Jauzac.

Condition: good first plate despite the silver decor being slightly faded in some areas, second plate well preserved with minor scratches; back passed, tears at the heads, scuffs at the cuts and corners. Hinges are sturdy. Interior is fresh, paper slightly yellowed (as is often the case), rare pinholes. Overall condition is acceptable.

César Cascabel is a novel by Jules Verne, published in 1890. The work was first serialized in the magazine Magasin d'éducation et de récréation from January 1 to December 15, 1890, and then in volume on November 17 of the same year, by Hetzel.

Fortune made, the Cascabel family, traveling performers, want to leave America to return to their native Normandy. Unfortunately, two swindlers steal from them, taking away all hope of paying for their crossing of the Atlantic. César, the head of the family, decides to return to their homeland in a caravan, first crossing the Bering Strait frozen in ice, then traveling through Siberia and Russia.
