AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Exceptional antique (circa 1850) painted wooden panel depicting the Samudra Manthan. (see explanation below). It originates from Shekhavati, Rajasthan, and is rich in details with superb colors.
I acquired this panel in Mandawa in 1989 during one of my many trips to the Shekhavati region, which is rightly considered India's open-air art gallery.

This panel was part of a set framing the ceiling of a luxurious Haveli undergoing restoration.

This panel measures 73 cm long, 17 cm high, and just over 2 cm thick. It weighs 2460 grams. This panel
was, as it was customary at the time, in teak.

The Samudra Manthan is an important episode in Hindu mythology describing the churning of the ocean of milk by the gods (Devas) and the demons (Asuras) in order to obtain amrita, the elixir of eternal life.
