Allegoria delle Scienze e delle Arti, oil painting on cardboard by Michele Gordigiani (Italy), 19th century, signed, with gilded frame; painting 56 x 100 cm; frame 72 x 112.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Oil painting on cardboard, signed lower left by Michele Gordigiani (Florence, May 29, 1835 – October 7, 1909), an important Italian painter appreciated for his portraits, which were commissioned by the most prestigious courts in Europe. His interest in the historical-mythological genre dates back to the artist's early years, to which this painting belongs.
The work, displayed horizontally, depicts two female figures in classical garb: the one on the left uses a compass, the one in the crimson dress holds a palette, brushes, and a finishing line, while on the right, a canvas and an easel can be seen. The two women represent the Sciences and the Arts respectively, accompanied by their instruments. The choice to depict the figures in a moment of consultation can be traced back to the belief that the various disciplines must communicate with each other in order to flourish.
The painting is immediate, with bold brushstrokes that describe the scene without getting lost in technicalities, leaving space for the pictorial gesture.
In excellent condition as shown in the photographs, within a gilded frame shaped in a semicircle on the upper margin.
