Description from the seller
Sint-Vincentius a Paulo with children – Was – probably France or Belgium – late 19th / early 20th century
Professionally shipped – more than 850 five-star reviews worldwide.
Well-modeled depiction of Saint Vincent de Paul, executed in wax with a light patina. The saint is depicted leaning forward in a posture of care and proximity, while carrying a child and resting a second child at his feet. Notably, this child lies on straw, as if referencing the child Jesus in the manger; a subtle and meaningful choice that links the work to themes of mercy, birth, and renewed life.
The piece is likely signed by Marchi on the side of the base. The modeling is particularly tenderly executed, with soft lines and an intimate expression that is typical of wax: the material allows nuances and subtlety that are rarely found in plaster. This gives the whole piece exactly that warm and distinctive character that immediately stands out.
Saint Vincent of Paul (1581-1660) was a French clergyman and founder of the Lazarists, and he was canonized in 1737. He was an inspiring example of virtue and charity, and is still venerated by many Catholics worldwide. He is often depicted with children because he dedicated himself to caring for the poor and founded various organizations such as orphanages, schools, and hospitals. He is also the patron saint of poor children and orphans.
Height approximately 16cm, in good condition with light signs of use consistent with age and material.
Please look at the photos carefully, they are part of the description.
