Description from the seller
Rare shell cameo replica from antiquity – Dionysus/Bacchus with thyrsus and lion skin – 19th century (circa 1850–1880)
Dimensions: 3.2 × 2.4 cm
Material: finely engraved natural shell
Splendid 19th-century cameo of mythological subject, hand-carved on a two-tone shell. It depicts Dionysus/Bacchus, identifiable by several iconographic attributes.
The Tirso behind the shoulder, the ritual staff of the god.
the leonine skin on the shoulder, a reference to the Nemean lion and Dionysian rites;
The flowing hair and the vegetal crown, classic elements of Bacchic representations.
The engraving is of superior quality, with deep curls, well-shaped reliefs, and great compositional balance. The back of the shell shows the natural curvature and stratification typical of 19th-century cameos.
Small old chip on the right edge, visible in the photo but not compromising.
Rare male subject with uncommon mythological iconography, a piece of museum quality. Ideal for collectors of prestigious cameos and neoclassical art.
Note: slight lateral irregularity of the shell, characteristic of 19th-century engravings.
The photos are an integral part of the description.
Guaranteed careful packaging handled by industry professionals.
