Description：
This is a refined Japanese lacquered natsume decorated with an elegant makie (蒔絵) design featuring kuchinashi (gardenia) leaves and pods rendered in rich gold tones. The rounded form of the caddy complements the soft, organic curves of the plant motif, giving the piece a warm, seasonal presence associated with early winter in tea ceremony aesthetics.
The surface is finished in deep, glossy black urushi lacquer, onto which the gold makie is carefully built up, with subtle texturing around the leaf edges that adds dimension and craftsmanship. The harmony of matte and polished gold accents suggests work from a skilled makie artist.
When opened, the interior reveals three chrysanthemum crests (菊紋) executed in silver makie. These motifs—one full chrysanthemum and two variations—give the piece an auspicious and courtly character, as the chrysanthemum is a classical imperial symbol. The interior lacquer is smooth and lustrous, consistent with high-quality workshop production.
The natsume is well-balanced, functional for tea practice, and also highly decorative, making it suitable for display or collection.
