Title: Zomers licht in knotwilgen - Sint-Martens-Latem of Deurle; Period: 19th century; Technique: oil painting; Country of origin: Belgium.
Description from the seller
Cesar De Cock (Ghent, July 23, 1823 – there, July 16, 1904) was a Belgian painter and engraver who was active in France and in Sint-Martens-Latem. He was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Latem artists' colony.
His brother Xavier De Cock was also a painter. Cesar De Cock studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent, initially as a singer, but after being struck by deafness, he dedicated himself to painting.
Cesar De Cock focused on landscape painting. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he fled to Deurle to return immediately to France after the conflict ended. He stayed briefly in Paris and later in Gasny, where he had a summer residence. From 1880, he settled permanently in Ghent.
Jean-Baptiste Corot, Henri Rousseau, Narcisse Díaz de la Peña, and Constant Troyon belonged to his circle of friends. These painters, also members of the School of Barbizon, had a strong influence on his work.
Cesar himself influenced many other painters, including Vincent van Gogh, who explicitly mentions him in his letters to his brother Theo van Gogh.
His works are exhibited in the most prestigious museums around the world, including the Prado in Madrid, the Louvre in Paris, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
