Description from the seller
Very beautiful collection of caricatures from Charivari, in two folio volumes, containing over 300 drawings by Cham, Henri-Alfred Darjou, Draner, Gilbert Randon, Valère Morland, Hadol, and others.
Le Charivari was published from 1832 to 1937. Founded on December 1, 1832, by Charles Philipon as a republican opposition newspaper to the July Monarchy, the satirical newspaper with a diverting purpose established itself throughout its history as sometimes radical, conservative, republican, or even anti-clerical.
Preserved in beautiful half-black morocco bindings from the period, with finely gilt-ornamented spine featuring gilt panels adorned with small tools, titles in gilt letters, and covers in percaline framed by cold-stamped borders.
Good copy. Leather slightly rubbed on the headbands and clasps. Percaline cover worn and rubbed at the joints, with some tears, and a few marks on the covers, including a large stain on the lower cover of volume II. The hinge is somewhat fragile.
Interior in good condition, volume II shows foxing and humidity marks. One page is torn in two (without loss), and about ten pages have small holes and brown stains (minor damages).
Cham, Darjou, Draner, Gilbert Randon, Valère Morland, Hadol, etc.
