Description from the seller
Orthodox icon of Saint Nicholas of Myra, Eastern Europe, second half of the 20th century.
An Orthodox icon depicting Saint Nicholas (Saint Nicholas of Myra), modeled after a 16th-century example. It is a more recently created work – not an antique piece – but traditionally styled and executed. Likely from the second half of the 20th century. The icon may originate from an Orthodox workshop in Eastern Europe.
Saint Nicholas was an archbishop of Myra in Lycia (present-day Turkey) in the 3rd–4th century AD. He is known as the patron saint of sailors, travelers, and students, and for the many miracles attributed to him. His feast day is celebrated on December 6th.
The icon depicts the saint in full bishop's attire, with an omophorion over the shoulders—a broad liturgical band worn by bishops as a symbol of their spiritual authority and their task to lead the faithful. In this case, the omophorion features dark crosses, a traditional element that refers to Christ’s sacrifice and the bishop’s responsibility as the shepherd of the church. The gold background is typical of icon painting and emphasizes the sacred and timeless nature of the depiction.
A beautiful and expressive icon, suitable for collectors, devotion, or decoration.
Dimensions: approximately 32 x 25 x 2.5 cm
Technique / material: hand-painted, tempera on wooden panel, gold-colored background.
Weight: approximately 1275 grams
In good condition with normal signs of use. The photos form an essential part of the description.
