Description from the seller
First posthumous edition of the complete works of Alexis Piron, published by Jean-Antoine Rigoley de Juvigny.
This is the most comprehensive collective edition of the works of Alexis Piron (1689-1775), a prolific playwright, songwriter, and satirical poet who inundated Voltaire with his epigrams. It notably includes all the plays performed by the author at the Théâtre Français (including his masterpiece The Metromania (1737), which Grimm said would remain as long as there is theatre and taste in France), as well as an extensive biography of the author by Rigoley de Juvigny, placed at the beginning of the first volume.
The work is adorned with a portrait of the author drawn and engraved by Augustin de Saint-Aubin.
Preserved in beautiful full marbled calf bindings, with triple fillet framing the covers, spine with raised bands decorated with compartments stamped with small tools, gilt-lettered title and volume pieces, and marbled edges.
Together, solid and well-preserved bindings despite rubbing, small holes, and minor damage on the back of volumes I and VII. Slightly rounded corners. Interior in very good condition, white paper, without foxing or rare spots. Careful printing on handmade paper.
There is a separate published volume 8 edition containing humorous works, as is often the case, missing from our copy.
AUTHOR: Alexis Piron / Jean-Antoine Rigoley de Juvigny
Complete Works
Edition: Paris, Lambert, 1776. 7 volumes in-8.
Complete in 7 volumes of approximately 500-600 pages each.
