"The Nightless City" published in Yokohama by Z.P Maruya & Co, 1899. First edition of the history of Tokyo's famous red-light district, Yoshiwara.
8vo, bound in publisher's red cloth, gilt lettered to both boards, pictorial design to spine and upper board. Original black endpapers. Collation: iv, 441pp, xix appendix, [3], with all twenty plates, some of which are in colour and folding [plate facing pp.192 is bound at pp.172, as common with other examples found.] Measuring approx 14.5cm by 21cm.
Condition: The binding is holding firmly and in good condition, corners and spine ends bumped and lightly worn, few scuffs and marks, sunned to boards and spine. Contents are holding, text block firm, though endpaper joints are cracked and strained with mull exposed, occasional light spotting, dust and toning to margins and with the odd grubby fingermark, a few folding plates strengthened to central fold, page edges roughly trimmed, dustsoiled to block edge. In good condition overall. Please see images for further condition.
