Port Wine
DESCRIPTION
The name of Dow’s has been closely linked with the finest ports from the Douro Valley for over two centuries.
Since 1912 when Andrew James Symington became a partner in Dow’s, five generations of Symington winemakers have worked at Dow’s vineyards, creating superbly concentrated wines known for their distinctive drier finish.
Over the last 100 years, the Symington family have focused on strengthening Dow's reputation as a Vintage Port producer. Their efforts were rewarded when the 2007 Vintage Port earned a perfect 100-point score from the Wine Spectator and the 2011 Vintage Port was awarded Wine of The Year - ranking No.1 in the Top 100 Wines list.
More recently, the family relaunched Dow's Aged Tawny collection to widespread acclaim and built a new winery and an award-winning visitor centre at Quinta do Bomfim.
WINEMAKER: Charles Symington & João Pedro Ramalho.
AWARDS/RECOMMENDATIONS
94 Points, Cellar Selection, Wine Enthusiast
89 Points, Wine Spectator
WINE VARIETIES: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and old mixed vines.
VINIFICATION
In the good year’s when Dow’s does not ‘declare’ a Vintage, the best Ports of Quinta do Bomfim are carefully selected and bottled as Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port. These wines are exceptionally good. They will tend to mature a little earlier than the very rare ‘Declared’ years, but can be every bit as good as some other Vintage Ports. The very high percentage of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional planted on the estate result in the powerful aromas of mint and violets on the finest Ports from Bomfim. Bomfim’ s wines are vinified in the quinta’s fermentation vats which have been successively upgraded over the years and which continue to produce excellent wines.
TASTING NOTES
Lifted blackcurrant and liquorice aromas combine with floral, rock rose notes and a subtle suggestion of mint and conifer/resinous essences. A wonderful streak of freshness and peppery seasoning is also perceptible on the nose. The palate shows intense, compact bramble fruit, which is succulent and smooth-textured. Fullbodied, with an ample structure that promises longevity. Underlying acidity provides balance and poise.
SERVING
Store the bottle horizontally, ideally in a cool place with a constant temperature. Decant before serving. An excellent dessert wine to enjoy on its own or with chocolate desserts. Also, a very good match with blue cheeses.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a recurring auction. The seal number(s) you see on the photos might differ from the one(s) on your bottle(s).
