2. Compositional and iconographic description
The work depicts a sloping street with a stone staircase, typical of the old Catalan quarters. The architecture, made of ochre and grayish stone, creates an intimate atmosphere where light slips over the rough surfaces and reveals centuries of urban history.
A human figure ascending the staircase introduces scale, movement, and narrative, reinforcing the everyday scene aspect of the painting. The plants flanking the steps add a green counterpoint that softens the stony bluntness of the environment.
Vila Arimany's brushstroke, clearly recognizable, combines thick textures, modular rhythms on the facades, and a masterful use of chiaroscuro, inheriting the tradition of painters like Francesc Gimeno or Martí Alsina, though with a more modern and serene sensibility, close to the school of Catalan landscape painters of the mid-20th century.
3. Style, School, and Assessment
Vila Arimany is a reference in Catalan contemporary realism, known for his material treatment of stone and his ability to capture Mediterranean light. His work is akin in spirit to artists like Josep Roca-Sastre or Joan Martí, highly valued for their technical mastery and nostalgic perspective on traditional architecture.
This canvas offers a solid composition, an impeccable balance between figure and architecture, and a high-quality pictorial execution. Its handcrafted golden frame significantly enhances its display presence.
Overall, it is a visually powerful, evocative piece that is highly representative of the artist's mature work, ideal for collections focused on Catalan landscape painting and historical urban scenes.
