Two vintage plant tables dating from 1975–1985, made with rattan (rattan webbing).
Description from the seller
Very nice, functional, and decorative plant tables. One table features a square top measuring 31cm x 31cm, with a height of 67cm and weighing approximately 2.7kg. This table is made from an unknown type of wood (possibly rattan), largely wrapped with rattan webbing. It is stained dark brown. The other table is slightly smaller: 62cm high, with a top measuring 20cm x 20cm, and weighing about 1.7kg. Its top is woven with rattan webbing. The webbing is genuinely woven and not made from a clamped rattan mat. The webbing is supported underneath by a thin wooden board, which prevents sagging and allows objects to stand stably on the tabletop.
Rattan and rotan look very similar. Both come from the rattan palm. Rattan is harvested higher up in the palm, while rotan grows closer to the ground. Both materials are used in furniture. Rattan is slightly more flexible than rotan and is therefore more often used in weaving and bending work. It is likely that both rattan and rotan were used in these two pieces of furniture. The weaving was done with shaved rattan stems.
Rattan and rotan are sometimes confused with bamboo. Bamboo is a very strong type of grass, which is also used to make furniture. However, bamboo is hollow, unlike rattan and rotan, which are solid.
These side tables probably date from the 1970s or early 1980s. They still look good. Signs of use are visible, but these are typical for tables that are around 50 years old. Both tables are still 100% stable.
They are beautiful and atmospheric pieces of furniture that take you back to the flower power era of the last century. Not only can these tables be used as plant tables, but they also serve as pedestals and even as side tables (see photos). They fit into any type of interior; very beautiful!
The tables are carefully packaged and shipped insured.
