Swan SF1 fountain pen by Mabie-Todd, made in the United Kingdom, with an ebonite body and a gold cap band, solid gold clip, and a 14K gold nib, dating to the 1920s–1930s.
Description from the seller
This elegant Swan SF1 by Mabie Todd & Co. is presented in a very well-preserved overall condition for its age, maintaining the aesthetic essence and the characteristic build quality of the British firm during the period of 1920–1930.
Body and cap
The body of brown ebonite shows a uniform shine, clearly preserving its longitudinal facets. It displays signs typical of its age, such as micro-marks and slight signs of use, but without cracks, deformations, or structural wear. The original engraving of the body remains visible and legible, a valuable detail in pieces from this era.
The cap retains its central band of solid 18K gold in excellent condition, with the British hallmarks fully defined, as well as an engraved inscription with old initials. The gilded band maintains its presence and shows only minor signs of handling, normal for an gold element nearly a century old.
Clip and fittings
The Swan clip, also in solid gold, is solid, firm, and well aligned. It shows no gaps and the SWAN engraving remains fully visible. The gold plating looks very good, with only minor superficial wear consistent with use and the age of the piece.
Nib
The 14-karat gold nib, engraved with the brand's own seal, is in excellent condition. No deformations, bends, or damage are observed on the tip. The ebonite feed retains its fins intact and in good condition.
A fountain pen nib of this type is typically known to offer fine writing with a certain classic flexibility, highly appreciated by collectors.
Charging system
The pen operates using a lever filler system (lever-activated loader). At first glance, the external mechanism appears complete and well-adjusted. As with all vintage pens over 90 years old, it is recommended to replace the ink sac if it has not been done recently, to ensure optimal and safe operation.
Box
It comes with its presentation case, in good overall condition, ideal for both preservation and display.
