Description from the seller
Bactrian Bronze Kohl Jar - Cosmetic Vessel
Circa 2nd-1st millennium BC
This elegant bronze kohl jar has a rounded body, a straight neck, and a wide, disc-shaped rim.
Kohl is a black, powdered cosmetic used around the eyes. In antiquity, it was made from substances such as galena (lead sulfide), antimony, or soot, mixed with oil or fat. People across the ancient Near East, Egypt, and Central Asia kept kohl in small jars like this and applied it with a slender rod to darken eyelids and lashes. Beyond beauty, kohl was thought to reduce glare, protect the eyes, and offer ritual protection.
Dimensions: 5,5cm x 3,5cm x 3,5cm
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
