Coco de mer (Lodoicea maldivica) belongs to the palm family (Palmae or Arecaceae). It is the only species in the genus Lodoicea, a so-called monotypic genus. The plant is endemic to the Seychelles, where it occurs on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse. The palm's fruit, also called coco de mer or sea coconut, contains the largest seed of all known plant species. The fruit takes six to seven years to mature; a mature fruit can have a diameter of over 40 cm.
