Catawiki fashion experts reveal how functionality and reinvention kept the Chanel 2.55 at the forefront of luxury and investment trends
Paris, February 13, 2025 — In February 1955, the fashion world was revolutionized with the introduction of the Chanel 2.55, a bold creation by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. To mark its 70th anniversary, Catawiki, the online platform specializing in special items, reveals key figures that highlight the growing demand for this iconic model. In 2024, sales of Chanel bags on the platform rose by 15%, with the number of bids increasing by 50%. The 2.55 model in particular saw a 60% surge in sales compared to 2023, with its average price rising by over 50% over the past five years. These figures, analyzed by Catawiki’s fashion experts Fleur Feijen and Lorenzo Altimani, demonstrate the lasting influence and increasing value of this timeless bag.
A Visionary Creation
The story of the Chanel 2.55 is unique. At the time, bags, which we would now call "clutches," lacked handles and were therefore impractical. Tired of constantly losing hers, Coco Chanel took inspiration from the shoulder bags used by soldiers during World War II, which featured a practical shoulder strap for easier carrying. Inspired, she decided to add a shoulder strap to her own designs. This practical innovation could today be described as visionary, as it revolutionized the fashion world and established the crossbody bag as an essential everyday item. "It was a memorable and pivotal moment for fashion as we know it today. While not every Chanel bag is a crossbody, every modern crossbody bag is inspired by Chanel," explains Fleur. Moreover, the 2.55’s design goes beyond the shoulder strap: the turn-lock clasp, known as the "Mademoiselle," pays homage to Gabrielle Chanel's personal life, as she remained single throughout her life. The quilted pattern, another iconic feature of the bag, may have been inspired by equestrian jackets, but some also see the influence of stained-glass windows from the orphanage where Chanel grew up, the Aubazine convent. This same convent is thought to have also inspired the chain worn by caregivers and the red lining, reminiscent of the institution's uniforms.
Iconic Design and Materials
Since its creation, the Chanel 2.55 has evolved, transitioning from jersey to prestigious materials such as leather, tweed, and alligator. "The materials used remain of exceptional quality, and every detail, from the chain to the stitching, reflects the unmatched craftsmanship behind this bag," notes Fleur. Its quilted pattern, inspired by equestrian jackets, has become an iconic symbol of the Chanel brand. In 2024, the most expensive 2.55 model sold on Catawiki reached €8,500.

A Cultural Icon and an Investment
Symbol of elegance and collector’s item, the Chanel 2.55 has transcended generations and has become an investment that continues to grow in value. "Buying a 2.55 today may even offer the opportunity to resell it at a higher price in a few years," says Lorenzo. The number of bids on Chanel 2.55 bags has increased, on average, by 50% in 2024, reflecting the growing demand from collectors and fashion enthusiasts. Fleur adds, "While the 2.55 is a true icon, it can also be reinvented and become the 'it-bag' of the season, depending on the materials or special editions offered." What's more, the average price of this model has risen by over 50% over the past five years, illustrating its growing value on the market. Some special models have seen an even greater spike, for example the 227 reissue of the 2.55 shoulder bag. It was sold for € 1,100 in 2018 and again in 2024 for €4,200, with a resale value that nearly tripled, seeing a 280% increase.

The Legacy of the 2.55 and Future Classics
In today’s handbag landscape, certain iconic pieces seem destined to stand the test of time. “At Chanel, I believe the Kelly, which was reissued last year, is here to stay,” says Lorenzo. “For other brands, the Dior Saddle is a great example—it debuted in 2001, disappeared for a while, and then made a comeback to cement itself as a true classic.”

Fleur shares this perspective: “All major couture houses have their iconic designs. Over time, they are reinvented and evolve into the ultimate classics we know today.” The Chanel 2.55 is a perfect illustration of this, with a 60% increase in sales on Catawiki in 2024—proof of its enduring appeal.
What makes a handbag a future classic? A distinctive silhouette, exceptional craftsmanship, and the ability to evolve without losing its essence. As the 2.55 celebrates its 70th anniversary, its legacy continues to inspire the next generation of iconic bags. Perhaps the classics of tomorrow are already right in front of us.
