World’s first ‘spia-mond’ ring predicted to fetch £200,000 on online auction site Catawiki

Valued at over £200,000, the 10-day online auction opens from Friday 4th December and with all bids on Catawiki starting at just £1, everyone’s in with a chance. Debuted on the hand of model and actress Samantha Mumba at the Spiderman II premiere in 2005 alongside that dress, the 20-carat diamond ring made a splash in the British and international press before embarking on a tour of jewellery shows around the globe, making this the first time it has come to the open market. The unforgettable ring weighs 103.37grs including 20.37 carat diamonds and 18 carat gold. The WebCut diamond at the heart of the piece is a unique 8-sided diamond with 48 facets (compared to 57 facets for a classic round shaped) that draws inspiration from nature’s greatest architect, the spider, resulting in an exceptional stone with remarkable sparkle. The Spider Ring was created in 2005 by the Antwerp-based, Dali Diamond Company. Founded in 1950 by the Morsel brothers David and Leon, the company became Sightholders of Debeers in 1969 as a mark of its exceptional diamonds and high craftsmanship. Ben Fried, General Manager of Catawiki UK, said: ‘At Catawiki we see all kinds of unusual collectibles pass through our auctions, but this is one of the most unique items we’ve ever auctioned off. The exceptional craftsmanship and one-of-a-kind design, combined with its place in pop culture history, makes this a true collectible in every sense and we are expecting a lot of interest in this particular item.’ Iris Hendriks, Catawiki’s Precious Jewellery and Diamonds Auctioneer, adds: ‘I am proud that our auction house was chosen to sell this magnificent piece. It is the first time (for me) that I have a true collector’s item in my jewellery auction and that is very exciting! Jewellery is usually not a collectible which you put on display, you wear it. This ring however, will find a true Spiderman fan, I’m sure!’ With more than 25,000 special objects available at any one time, Catawiki offers something interesting for everyone. Weekly auctions take place across more than 80 categories, from modern art to wine, whisky, watches and jewellery, all curated by specialists in their field. The Spider Ring is live on Catawiki for previews now and bidding opens from midday Friday 4th December.
