M.C. Escher: master of impossible illustrations

In collaboration with Albert Goldenbeld - art expert

A lot of people are familiar with the work of M.C. Escher. My former dentist had a reproduction of ‘Sky and Water I’ hanging on the wall in his office. The fascinating transition from geese to fish served as a distraction from the treatment you were receiving, and it worked. M.C. Escher is one of the world’s best-known graphic artists and many know why. His nearly impossible drawings, such as ‘Ascending and Descending’ and ‘Relativity’ are still admired by millions all across the globe.

The graphic work of Escher is collected worldwide and is often purchased as an investment. For example, the woodcut ‘Carruba Tree in Ravello’ from 1932 was auctioned on Catawiki for a record amount of €36,000 in 2016.

Another record amount on Catawiki was established last week (€15,101) for an artwork made by Escher. In this case, the personally signed lithography ‘Three worlds’.

All of this makes for a promising prospect in regard of Catawiki’s future art auctions. We regularly organise themed auction for works of a specific artist, M.C. Escher for example. The next M.C. Escher themed auction will take place March 17-30 2017. Perhaps you are looking to acquire unique artworks to add to your collection. If so, explore our art auctions and start bidding.
