Expert’s Choice: Mark Harrison Selects the Highlights from This Week's Book Auction

Written by Thomas | 31st October 2018

In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our experts shares their favourite items currently in auction. This week our books expert, Mark Harrison, selects five exceptional items from our book auctions for you to enjoy.

1. Gregor Reisch - Margarita Philosophica - 1583

This vellum-bound book is a rare complete version of the great medieval encyclopaedia of Gregor Reisch; the ‘Margarita Philosophica.’ This book was a customary textbook of the higher schools of Renaissance Europe and was printed in Basel by Sebastian Henricpetri in 1583. This edition, edited by the great mathematician Oronce Fine, is important since it contains the updated double-page world map after Gemma Frisius and Petrus Apianus, showing the new world in detail and now mentioning America.

2. Corneille & Simon Vinkenoog - 69 voor Corneille - 2002

This beautiful collaboration between Simon Vinkenoog and Corneille is one of ten specially numbered and signed copies. This limited edition is packed with numbered photographs and artworks.

3. John Gerrard Keulemans - Onze Vogels in huis en tuin - 1869/1876

This lovely three volume set has over 200 hand-coloured illustrations, showing both native (Dutch) birds as well as some more exotic species. All the birds that are depicted in these volumes are extensively described and discussed. You can find these volumes in this week’s Science & Nature Books Auction.

4. Eberhard Freiherr von Wechmar - Delianer. Folder with 20 lithographs - 1928

These amusing, but not always flattering caricatures by Von Wechmar, were published in 1928 after his return from Sumatra. Von Wechmar later joined the Nazi party, and was a member of the SA, and got executed after the SS took over the organisation in 1934.

5. Charles-Antoine Jombert - Méthode pour apprendre le dessin - 1784

This beautiful book is packed with engravings of designs, anatomical details, and attractive images, engraved after the masters of their time, such as Michelangelo, Cochin, and others. You can find this book in our Old & Rare Books (Pre-1800) Auction.
