In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our experts shares their favourite items currently in auction. This week our Comics expert, Jacques Pels, selects several exceptional items from our comic auctions for you to enjoy.

1. The Fantastic Four (Vol.1 1961) #1 (G) - i-AMF Top Collection – First Edition

Today starts the special Fantastic Four (i-AMFoundation Top Collection) Auction! In this auction, you can find many important comic books from the creative minds of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The auction contains all the classic key issues and some of the very first appearances of well-known characters in comic history. To name a few: Galactus, Black Panther, Silver Surfer, The Skrulls, Dr. Doom, and last but not least, The Fantastic Four. One of the highlights of this auction is this rare first edition of The Fantastic Four #1 from 1961.

2. Walt Disney - Donald Duck Story Book - Hardcover – First Edition - (1937)

Did you know that in the early days, Donald Duck was only a secondary character appearing in Mickey Mouse cartoons? But it didn’t take long for this expressive Duck to become an independent protagonist in many cartoons and books. In this week’s Disney Auction, you can find this early Donald Duck Story Book, that was published by Whitman in 1937. The comic tells the story of Donald Duck writing his own book, whilst being assisted by Mickey & Minnie Mouse, and other friends. It’s not easy finding a copy of this book in such a fair condition. This is mainly because these comics were inexpensively produced, and most copies have degraded over time.

3. Milady in 3000 - original illustration - cm 34,5 x 50 - Loose page - First edition - (1984)

Roberto Raviola, a.k.a. Magnus, was inspired by the science fiction style of Alex Raymond when he created “Milady in 3000”. These stories, that take place in 3000 A.D., are a science fiction mixture of many different influences. Old Chinese costumes, Italian Renaissance intrigues, and hyper-technological environments come together in his marvelous work. In our specially dedicated Magnus Auction, you can find an original signed illustration for a lithograph, featuring the title character.

4. Suske en Wiske – “De Raap van Rubens” – Author Copy (one of 12) - Hardcover - First edition - (2015)

In our Willy Vandersteen Albums Auction (Exclusive Editions) you can find this unique large-size author’s copy of Suske en Wiske’s classic story; “De Raap van Rubens”. The story was created to commemorate the 400th birthday of Belgian painter Peter Paul Rubens. The original album appeared as nr. 109 in the series. For our specially dedicated “De Raap van Rubens” auction, 100 deluxe albums were made of which only twelve author copies exist, and this is one of them!

5. Tanino Liberatore - Glamour Book - vol. Liberator - with box, overprint. and card - Paperback - First edition - (1985)

Although the work of Tanino Liberatore could be perceived as realistic, this Italian comic artist certainly has elements that go far beyond the traditional boundaries of the realistic genre. The strange settings of his stories and the unusual colouring make Liberatore's work rather unusual. His work covers a wide range of art, from comics to record covers for RCA. In this week’s Italian Comics Auction you’ll find this signed and numbered anthological volume of Liberatore’s “Glamour Book”.
