At that time, Germany was in severe shortage of precious metals and foreign currency. Starting in 1916, the government urged citizens to donate gold and silver jewelry in exchange for iron/tin commemorative medals or rings, usually inscribed with 'I gave gold to protect the country, I take pride in iron.'
