Hubert de Vries was born in Antwerp on 21 August 1899. During the First World War, he resided with his parents in Calais in France.
Back in Antwerp, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, he became a student of baron Is. Opsomer and Julien Creytens. However, he developed his personality, by his continuing admiration for Jacob Smits and for the Flemish expressionists, particularly for Gust de Smet and Constant Permeke.
Preference for marines, figures, portraits, religious topics.
The lumpy paint past and the mystical light in which some works bathe, remind of Jacob Smits.
His work is owned by King Boudewijn, His Majesty King Albert and several important collections.
