Portative Panel with a Mask - CHOKWE - Angola
Provenance: private collection, Belgium (information shall be transmitted to the buyer).
Dimensions: +/- 40 cm x 40 cm.
Materials: wood, feathers, wicker...
According to Neyt, among the Chokwe, this very exceptional object would be a panel destined to hang the famous mask of the Pwo woman.
This is a quite unusual mask presentation. The mask of small dimensions, presumably not intended to be worn on the face, is placed in the centre of a circular panel in woven wicker. There are feather ornaments on the border. The little antique mask perfectly complies with the aesthetic canons of the Chokwe sculpture of Angola.
Object of African art, destined to collectors seeking for unordinary pieces.
This piece illustrates, as a reminder, that our knowledge on tribal art is constantly lacking and always requires further studies.
This pieces comes from a prestigious collection of African art from Brussels. Further information shall be provided to the buyer.
