Rare Dance Mask – Pende – D.R.C.
In good state. It dates back to around 1930. On stand.
Provenance: Ex- collection of Daniel Storm, Brussels. Bought from him by H. Westerdijk in 1961. Mr. Storm collected it in Kasaye Province well before independence in 1960 and as early as the late 1940s.
Masks of the western Pende have been an important source of influence and inspiration for their neighbours, both to the west, but especially also to the east (Kasaye). Though its form elements are clearly western Pende in origin, this mask with its plank – like appearance is without doubt to be placed in the central zone of the eastern Pende. Especially the extension beneath the face shows some link to pieces of the Kuba, Kete and Bena Biombo. The face is surmounted by a three- pointed cap/ hairdo of Western Pende design, notably that of the Phumbu or chief. The face is very powerful and convincingly strong and severe. The open mouth shows pointed white teeth and the eyes are almost shut, with heavy upper lids. The colour is of an earth-like red with a beautiful deep, dull hue. The bone-dry interior is well-carved out, with a smooth surface.
