This fantastic Kwele dance mask gives one the feeling of an old piece of furniture. It belongs to a classic Kwele mask type whereby the horns run all around the heart – shaped face to meet at the chin. The face is Kwele all over with pierced eyes, proving that the mask was actually used for dancing and was not just a wall decoration in the Bwiti meeting house. On the upper part of the horns, two pairs of extra eyes in Kwele style are present as an additional ornament. The mask is in white and blackish brown with a small touch of blue in the tiny mouth. The carving style on all parts is done with planes meeting each other under various angles, resulting in a distinct facetting effect in a very metric fashion. Here, as in virtually all Kwele mask types, human and animal form elements are mixed and blended into one. This mask is said to represent a ram’s head.
