Mami Wata: the name comes from the English language, “mommy water”, she is the goddess-mother of waters, a mythical figure of the Voodoo cult (official religion of Benin).

Feared by the fishermen, this goddess symbolises both the nourishing sea and the destructive ocean.

Mami Wata is first and foremost an Éwé deity from a widespread cult of the Atlantic coast of Togo (but also in Nigeria, Cameroon and in the D.R of Congo), where she symbolises the supreme power.
