Ad Snijders (1929 – 2010) was an artist from Eindhoven, draughtsman, collagist and sculptor. At the age of 12 he started drawing and actually he never stopped doing so. His style can best be described as expressionist, figurative art.
As an artist, Ad Snijders is an autodidact. This was mainly because after primary school he had to start working immediately. He started as a student-setter at a printing company, but always kept drawing in his spare time. This led to him joining ‘Kunstkring de Kempen’ in 1947 at the age of eighteen, as one of the youngest members. At a later age, he was given the opportunity to go to college. Thanks to the French government he received a scholarship to attend the Académie de la Grande Chaumiére in Paris, in 1961 and 1962.
Both Snijders themes and his way of working turned to events in the time periods in which he worked. With that, his work was always up-to-date. During his career Snijders knew several ways of working. He started as a draughtsman, but made his first oil painting in 1955. Painting was immediately self-evident to him. Between 1958 and 1963 Snijders regularly made images of paper-mache and wood, but also fragile metal structures. In 1964 he made his provisional last painting and engaged in collage techniques. Around 1970, the painted and drawn reality, the figuration, returned to his work.
The work of Ad Snijders has been exhibited in leading galleries and museums from 1957, both nationally and internationally. For example, his work was on display at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and several times at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. In 1959 he exhibited, a.o., in gallery Taurus in Nijmegen together with artists Armando and Kees van Bohemen. A year later, his work was selected for Premio Marzotto in Valdagno, Italy. Here he exhibited together with Corneille and Lucebert, among others.
