Early Edo period (1600-1868) Hanbo with tare.
The Hanbo (半頬) served mostly as a chin-guard which on some occasion coud reach the cheeks. It is the oldest "Menpo" model and probably the only one that samurai really used in battles.
Later to be replaced during the Edo period by the Menoshita-men which covers the lower part of the face under the eyes, including the nose, which is generally detatchable.
