Reproduction - The Kota arrived through “Bantu” migrations; The ancestors’ cult, the “Bwete”, constitutes the centre of the “Bakota” religious beliefs; this sculpture, which has reached a degree of astonishing stylisation and abstraction, is reduced to its shoulders, presents arms topped by a large face, concave if feminine, convex if masculine. Brass and copper plating on wood core. The Kota figurine has the role of medium between the living and the dead. The bones of some figures were cylindrical. These sculptures played the role of relic guardians, named “Ngulu”.
