Double-walled ceramic bowl by Thomas Bohle. Due to its difficulty and complexity, this technique is only practised by a few ceramicists.
Thomas Bohle was born in 1958 in Dornbirn, in western Austria. After training as a nurse, he worked in this field for many years. In 1987 he completed an internship as a ceramist and then worked in various studios. In 1991 he opened his first studio. After a study trip to Japan, exhibitions in Tokyo and Shanghai follow. In 2006 Thomas Bohle received the Bavarian State Prize. A well-known gallery in London then took over as representation. The artist has been working in his new studio in Dornbirn since 2008. In 2014 he received the honorary gift for art from the state of Vorarlberg.
I've been working with clay for over thirty years. The work, the design of the dishes and bowls with the hands fascinates me just as much as the change in the combustion process. I make my works double-walled and from one piece of clay. This requires a special imagination as I turn my works upside down. The drying phase and baking are very delicate with double-walled vessels, because when drying the outer wall dries differently than the inside. I try to emphasise the shape by contrasting the outside shape with the inside. The design is supported by the colours. The works display an optical weight, but due to the narrow base they confuse the proportional smoothness and the emptiness within, and at the same time also lightness. Asia: glazes such as Ox blood, tenmoku, celadon, ash glaze, etc. fascinated me from the beginning, this passion is also reflected in my glazes. To get a special colouring, I burn reducing in a gas oven at 1280 to 1300 degrees.
Inspiration: I get inspiration from old handmade bowls and bowls from shapes in nature. Architecture inspires me as much as sculpture, music and other arts. For me, celebrating is trying out new shapes and colours, but also extensive work with other artistic forms of expression.
