This third edition in Folio from 1804 consists of 41 plates including the portrait of the author and 3 route maps (one 60 x 38 cm, two of 45 x 62 cm), and the map of the provinces engraved by Tardieu. The second edition of 1799 consisted of 39 plates, it was published a year after the first of 32 plates “réunies dans un atlas pour les acquéreurs de la première édition.”

Copy in very good condition. Restored binding, spine and corners with lavaliere leather, smooth spine adorned with two pieces and gold irons.

Solid volume, the first hinge is cracked. Very good prints of boards, some foxing, very pale marginal wetting at the top of the title and leaflet of the table.

This trip remains one of the best descriptions of the lands traversed by Macartney, offering accurate information about the Sciences, Natural History, walls and customs prevalent in the lands that Macartney visited. It remains one of the best descriptions of the time on China and Cochinchina Particularly interesting are the Observations and Descriptions made during the Author's stay in the Imperial Palace of Yuen-Min-Yuen, and during his crossing of the Chinese Empire, from Beijing to Canton.

Assembled after the papers of Lord Macartney as well as commanders and ambassadors of the trip by Macartney's secretary, Sir George Staunton. Macartney was sent to China by order of King George III as an extraordinary ambassador for the first time with the aim of establishing trade relations, meeting the Chinese elite and bringing back all manner of observations from his trip. He sailed to Portsmouth with three ships, The Lion, Indostan and The Jackal. Macartney largely crossed the country, stopping in Tianjin and Beijing. However, due to different customs, the embassy was a complete failure. For the Chinese, diplomatic relations could not take place on an equal footing; ambassadors had to bow down to the emperor and swear allegiance to him, which Macartney refused, as he could not accept any subordination of the King of England to the Emperor of China. China's outright rejection of trade relations led to the beginnings of what would become known as the Opium Wars and the fall of the Chinese empire.
