Neoclassical medallion by French sculptor Auguste Barre. Signed A Barre fecit 1848.
Auguste Barre (1811/1896) is a French sculptor. He notably made numerous portraits of the imperial court. During his career, he produced no less than 26 busts of Napoleon III. He was one of the most fashionable sculptors of his time.
The medallion is extremely fine and depicts a portrait of a woman in the antique style.
The material of the medallion is difficult to determine but it seems to me to be hard stone.
