Also known as 'Detroit Agate', fordite is neither a mineral nor a rock at all. Although used in the jewellery industry, its origins are rather bizarre. It is made up of thousands of layers of car paint that were pressed on top of each other and hardened when cars were painted by hand. The paint was 'baked' and annealed several times until it encrusted on the machinery used to paint cars. Craftsmen later used the coloured material to make semi-precious stones.
The colours can also reveal when they are from: predominance of black or brown up to the 1950s, pastels and bright colours from the 1960s onwards. Unfortunately, the techniques that made this great rough material years ago are no longer used.

It is believed some precious stones and minerals have
beneficial and spiritual properties. Catawiki cannot
