A large and beautiful sculpture group in bronze by the well-known French artist Antonin Mercié.
The impressive image is signed on the base, titled and with the foundry mark: Barbedienne Fondeur’ (1810-1892).
Mercié was already a beloved artist during his lifetime.
‘Gloria Victis’ is described in the standard work by Pierre Kjellberg, Bronzes of the 19th century (USA, 1994), on page 488 and a larger variant is depicted on page 489.
Kjellberg writes that the group was a huge success; in plaster it was exhibited at the Salon of 1874 and in bronze the following year.
