A spectacular Istrian marble medallion, carved and crafted by hand, depicting the IHS trigram, topped by a cross and surrounded by the image of a sun. Origin: Venice, private collection.
Over time, this inscription (IHS) has been interpreted in various ways, the best known was ‘Iesus Hominum Salvator’ i.e. ‘Jesus, Savior of mankind’.
The idolatrous use of the trigram was condemned by many believers, so that Pope Martin V thought he could solve the problem by adding a small cross above letter H.
