Stunning Carrara marble sculpture depicting St. Paul, entirely carved by hand. From a private collection, Venice.
This sculpture is in a class of its own, for its large size and its condition. Perfectly proportioned and quite heavy.
Please note the remarkable care and precision of details, the amazing expression of faces and the skill in carving them from a single marble block. No gluing nor sticking, which increases its value and quality.
Hight craftsmanship and historical quality.
A unique lot, perfect as ornaments and much more. A truly precious sculpture. This item was one of a pair (Peter and Paul).
Saint Paul is represented with the sword, as he was killed by it. It was considered a noble way to die; he was a Roman citizen. The sword therefore symbolizes his martyrdom. But the sword is also given another meaning: Saint Paul is called ‘the apostle of the people’, as he was the first to understand that the message of Christ was extended to all humanity and not only to the Jews; he carried this message everywhere. The sword is an instrument of conquest. Saint Paul’s sword, which allowed him to conquer the world, was his word, his eloquence.
