Shirvan Marasali is the name of a region located in north-eastern Azerbaijan, where you will find many villages dedicated to weaving the most beautiful and refined rugs in the Caucasus. Shirvan was also the generic name for Caucasian rugs of superior quality, when the rugs from this region were not yet considered of high value. In fact, the 19th century merchants considered them less expensive goods, and much less important than Turkish or Persian rugs, which were instead much higher priced and more precious. The Shirvan rugs, like the majority of Caucasian rugs, are decorated with geometric designs and are entirely made of wool (at least until the Russian Revolution of 1917), the yarns are of high quality, the knotting is of an impressive density and the colours are very beautiful, both in the single tones and colour combinations, which are the heart of the expressive strength of this genre of rug. Shirvan rugs are now much-loved and sought-after by collectors all over the world, so much so that they find room in the catalogues of important auction houses.
