Three authentic ceiling panels (tiles).
From the whole ceiling of a Milanese palace.
Dimensions: 33x19 cm each (in frame).
Egg tempera on a wooden panel.
With wide craquelé - Restored for conservation purposes and very well framed. The dovetail joints visible on the back served to form the ceiling of the antique palace.
Except rare cases, the painting on panel is essentially profane. Some dominant subjects and ideas stand out: family prestige, ancient and contemporary literary culture, dreams and visions of the collective imagination. Many feature ladies and gentlemen images, with coat of arms of families united by complex matrimonial and political alliances. Dancing cherubs appear on festoons playing musical instruments, alongside real and imaginary animals. Not to mention the allegorical representations of a whole universe of symbols often close to medieval sensitivity, such as the imaginative bestiary, made of mermaids, greyhounds, cheetahs.
