Coming up for auction is a rare pamphlet:
Title: ‘Two down and one to go’, War Department pamphlet,
Publisher: U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington D. C.,
Year of publication: 1945
Cover: Softcover, 26 pages, small format
Edition size: first edition.
This pamphlet was distributed immediately after the short film ‘Two Down, One to Go!’ was screened to everyone in the army who saw the film. First edition, pamphlet no. 21-31 of the Ministry of War. The 1942 illustration by Arthur Szyk on the front page was amended for this publication. Mussolini and Hitler are crossed out with a red cross and the Japanese emperor is shown without his allies, hence the title that only Japan remains to be beaten. Illustrated with six partially coloured reproductions of drawings (artist unknown). Quote from the pamphlet: ‘Now, together with our allies, we shall concentrate devastating power against this treacherous enemy and rid the world permanently of this menace of barbarism. We can do this if every American, in or without uniform, keeps in heart and mind the plain fact that we will not have won this war, nor can we enjoy any peace until Japan is completely crushed. GC Marshall. Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. Interestingly, the date printed on the pamphlet is 28 April, 1945, two days before Hitler's suicide.
Clear signs of wear and tear, the back cover has minor flaws and what appears to be a chocolate stain. At some point four pages stuck together at the top, and now is now marked where it was separated. Various small creases and tears, as the paper in the pamphlet is very delicate.
