The mechanically powered flashlight got its Dutch nickname “knijpkat” (squeeze cat) from the sound that it produced when operated. A cat-like whining sound.
Due to a shortage of all kinds of raw materials and products, and the lack of batteries, one was forced to think creatively about the smallest objects for our daily use. Due to the blackout it had become very important to have a light in the darkness. Philips had a convenient solution for this in the shape of a mechanically powered flashlight that functioned by manual control.
The mechanically powered flashlight was invented by engineer L.J. Kalff. Although the dyno torch wasn’t patented until 1942, the production already started in 1941.
