French book imitation with a hidden carafe and cups. Leather-upholstered wood. Made halfway the 20th century.
Seven wooden book spines upholstered in calf leather and morocco offer access to a hidden compartment in this handmade book imitation made halfway the 20th century. The attentive reader will recognise the hint (a joke by the maker) ‘l’antique soif de lire’, the title of the book in the middle.
A small knob opens the door and gives access to three compartments. The largest compartment of this calf leather-upholstered cabinet contains a contemporary brown-glass carafe (empty) with stop and leather bely and neck strap. A gilded Napoleonic monogram on the leather belly strap. The two smaller compartments contain a total of four copper cups that are decorated with a meandering fleur de lis pattern.
The stop of the carafe offers insight into the provenance of this unique piece: The text 'Brevete S.G.D.G.' refers to a French patent from before 1968, and the title labels and style also indicate the middle of the 20th century.
In very good condition. The ‘cabinet’ is somewhat scraped along the edges, the spines of two ‘books’ have some minimal wear.
