The Baule are a people of Ivory Coast, they belong to the Akan group. Baule statuary (masks and statuettes) is very sought-after for its refinement.
Among the African Baule figurines we can recognise two great types: the Baule figurines of husbands or wives from the hereafter, and less frequent, those representing a spirit or genius of nature, with the aim of appeasing it.
Regarding Baule figurines, we can distinguish the evocations of spirits of nature (with a sacrificial patina); from that of the spirits related to romantic relationships (with a polished patina).
There are also Baule ancestor masks. Baule masks present the same characteristics as the statuary: elegant, finely carved and polished.
There are also Baule zoomorphic masks reminding the buffalo, the ram and the antelope. These masks are always worn by men. They are different from Baule ancestors’ portraits masks, because more conceptual and schematic, since they represent spirits.
