The Dan, or more precisely, the Danwopeumin, “those who speak the Dan language”, are a people of west Africa, mainly established in the centre-west of Ivory Coast, near the cities of Man, Danané, Biankouma, Zouan-Hounien and Sipilou.
These types of Dan masks, ornamented with braids and vegetable fibres, are dance masks used by the Dan people in funerary ceremonies.
They are usually worn by persons who are high-ranked within the social hierarchy.
